Fiber Optic Internet (Glasvezel) in the Netherlands
Symmetric gigabit speeds, ultra-low latency, and future-proof connectivity across Dutch homes.
The Netherlands possesses one of the densest and most technologically advanced fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks in Europe. Known locally as Glasvezel, fiber optic connectivity delivers laser light directly to residential properties, eliminating the latency and speed degradation inherent in old copper DSL lines.
Why Dutch Fiber is the Gold Standard
Unlike coaxial cable (such as Ziggo), where download speeds are vastly higher than upload speeds, Glasvezel is 100% symmetric. If you order a 1,000 Mbps connection, you receive 1,000 Mbps download AND 1,000 Mbps upload.
Advantages of Glasvezel
- Symmetric download and upload bandwidth up to 8,000 Mbps
- Ultra-low latency (1 to 3 ms ping) for lag-free gaming
- Immune to weather conditions and neighborhood congestion
- Generous promotional welcome gifts and cashback from providers
Considerations
- Not yet available at 100% of addresses (requires postcode check)
- Requires an active Fiber Termination Unit (FTU) in your meterkast
- Installation technician visit may be needed for initial activation
XGS-PON: Speeds Up to 8,000 Mb/s (8 Gbps)
Dutch network operators have aggressively rolled out XGS-PON (10-Gigabit Symmetric Passive Optical Network) technology. This enables providers like Odido to offer 8,000 Mbps symmetric connections, and Delta to offer 5,000 Mbps.
For everyday web browsing, 8 Gbps is far beyond what single Wi-Fi devices can consume. However, for households with multiple tech enthusiasts, home servers (NAS), and heavy 4K media workflows, it gives every device generous headroom, even at peak times.

The Meterkast Installation Process
In Dutch houses and apartments, the main telecom connection is virtually always housed in the meterkast—the small utility cupboard near the front entrance where electric meters, gas meters, and water valves reside.
When your fiber connection is activated, the provider will ship an installation package containing an optical patch cable (usually green LC/APC connectors) and a modern Wi-Fi router. If your address has never had an active fiber line, a technician will usually visit to verify signal strength and mount the termination box.
Complimentary Connection & Gifts
Ordering Odido, KPN, or Delta through verified channels frequently includes complimentary connection worth up to €105, plus your choice of welcome gifts such as a Nintendo Switch 2, iPad, Dyson Airwrap, or up to €200 cashback.
Frequently Asked Questions
Practical answers to common questions about Dutch internet contracts, speeds, and installation.
Glasvezel utilizes pure glass optical fibers rather than electrical copper. It delivers 100% symmetric speeds (identical upload and download bandwidth), imperviousness to electromagnetic interference, and latency under 3 milliseconds.
The physical fiber infrastructure is primarily owned by KPN Netwerk NL, Open Dutch Fiber (ODF, used extensively by Odido), Delta Fiber, and Glaspoort. Multiple commercial providers lease access to these networks, ensuring competitive pricing.
In Dutch residences, fiber terminates at the Fiber Termination Unit (FTU) located inside the hall utility cupboard (meterkast). A network termination device (NTU or fiber modem) converts the light signals into standard RJ-45 Ethernet for your router.
