Why local advice matters
Internet packages in the Netherlands are mostly sold at national prices, so you might expect the choice to be the same everywhere. In practice, three local factors make a big difference:
- Which networks reach your address. Some streets have fiber from more than one network plus cable; others have only cable or DSL.
- The type of building. A narrow canal house, a concrete apartment tower and a detached farmhouse each need a different Wi-Fi approach.
- How long you stay. Cities with many students and internationals have more short leases, which makes contract length more important.
Big-city patterns at a glance
In Amsterdam, older multi-storey homes mean the router in the meterkast often cannot reach the top floor. Rotterdam combines high-rise living with pre-war stairwell flats, and concrete walls are the main Wi-Fi challenge. In The Hague, internationals on fixed-term postings should watch the minimum contract term. Utrecht mixes shared student houses with new-build family districts. Eindhoven's tech community benefits most from symmetric fiber upload, and Groningen combines student rooms in the city with rural addresses where 5G can be an alternative.

The approach is the same everywhere: check your postcode, choose a speed that fits your household, compare the full-term price and plan your switch. Start with the postcode check guide, or go back to the speed calculator to find your tier.
Questions about local internet
Do internet prices differ between Dutch cities?
Package prices are usually national, but which packages you can choose depends on the networks at your address. A city or street with both fiber and cable gives you more choice than an address with only one network.
Can I take my internet contract with me when I move to another city?
Usually yes, if your provider can deliver at the new address. If it cannot, many providers allow you to end the contract. Request the move a few weeks before your moving date.
My city is not listed. Does the advice still apply?
Yes. The steps are the same everywhere in the Netherlands: check your postcode, pick a speed, compare the full-term price and order or switch at the right moment.
