Home Internet in The Hague
Diplomats, international staff and families in classic brick townhouses: a practical guide to choosing internet in Den Haag.
The Hague is the Netherlands' international city. Embassies, international courts and organisations bring thousands of internationals here, many on fixed-term postings. The housing stock is just as distinctive: elegant 1920s and 1930s brick townhouses, upstairs and downstairs apartments (bovenwoning and benedenwoning), seaside apartments in Scheveningen and modern family neighbourhoods on the edge of the city.
That mix creates two typical questions: how do I avoid a contract that outlasts my posting, and how do I get Wi-Fi from a meterkast at street level up to my apartment? This guide answers both.
Connection types in The Hague
Fiber (glasvezel) is available at many addresses across Den Haag. Where it is active, it gives symmetric speeds and low latency, which helps for video conferencing across time zones. Cable from Ziggo reaches most of the city and is a reliable alternative. 5G home internet is useful when you arrive before your registration is complete or when your stay is short.
Because availability is decided per address, start with a postcode and house-number check. Our postcode availability guide explains what "available", "planned" and "requires installation" mean.
Short postings and contract length
For many internationals in The Hague the contract term matters more than a few euros of monthly discount. Before you order, check:
- Minimum term. Promotional prices are often tied to a 1- or 2-year term.
- What happens after the minimum term. Dutch consumer contracts generally become cancellable with one month's notice once the initial term ends.
- Moving abroad. Some providers allow early termination when you move to an address where they cannot deliver, but this is not universal, so read the terms.
- Cooling-off period. Online and distance contracts usually come with a 14-day period in which you can cancel.
Townhouses, upstairs flats and Wi-Fi
In a split townhouse, the meterkast for the upstairs apartment is often at the street door, with the living space one or two floors up. A router left in the meterkast will struggle. Ask the technician to place the router where you live, or run a network cable upstairs and add a mesh unit. Our Wi-Fi and hardware guide explains the options.

Frequently asked questions
I work for an international organisation in The Hague. Can I get a short contract?
Some providers offer monthly cancellable plans, and 5G home internet is usually cancellable per month. Standard fiber and cable promotions often require a 1- or 2-year term, so check the minimum duration before you order.
Do I need a Dutch bank account for internet in The Hague?
Most providers collect payment by direct debit from an IBAN. Many European IBANs are accepted, but not all providers accept every foreign account, so confirm this during the order process.
Which is better in a Hague upstairs flat: fiber or cable?
Both can work well. The bigger issue is often that the meterkast sits downstairs at street level. Ask where the connection enters, and plan a mesh system or cable run to your living space.
Is fiber available in Scheveningen and the outer districts?
Fiber has been rolled out in many parts of the city, including newer districts. Availability still varies per address, so use a postcode and house-number check.
