KPN Internet: Fiber, Speeds and What You Really Pay
The biggest name in Dutch telecom. Here is what KPN offers on fiber and DSL, what a package costs after the promotion ends and when another provider may suit you better.
KPN is the largest telecom company in the Netherlands and the name most people recognise first. It owns one of the country's biggest fiber networks as well as the old copper telephone network that DSL runs on. That combination means KPN can offer home internet at almost every Dutch address, but the connection you actually get depends heavily on whether fiber has reached your street.
This page explains what KPN offers, what you pay over the full first year, and how KPN compares with brands that sell internet over the same cables.

KPN's network: fiber first, copper on the way out
KPN has been rolling out fiber optic internet for years, and fiber is now its main product. On fiber you get symmetric speeds: upload is as fast as download, which makes a real difference for video calls, cloud backups and sending large files. Where fiber is not yet available, KPN can still connect you over DSL, but speeds are a fraction of fiber and the copper network is gradually being replaced.
KPN also opens its fiber network to other providers. In practice, that means the same physical line in your meterkast can be used by KPN itself or by a cheaper brand. The difference is then mostly price, router quality, service and extras rather than raw speed.
Wi-Fi, TV and extras
KPN sells internet on its own or combined with TV, and offers mesh Wi-Fi equipment to extend coverage through larger homes. That is useful in tall Dutch townhouses where the connection enters at ground level and the home office is two floors up. Extras are convenient but each one adds to the monthly bill, so decide what you really need before ordering. Our Wi-Fi and hardware guide explains when a mesh system is worth it, and the internet + TV guide shows when a bundle saves money.
Who KPN suits
- Households that want one established company for internet, TV and support.
- Homes on fiber that want multi-gigabit speeds and symmetric upload.
- People who value a physical service network and broad product choice over the lowest possible price.
If price is your main concern, compare KPN with budget brands that use the same fiber network, such as Budget Thuis. The speed can be similar while the monthly cost is lower.
Why people choose KPN
- Large own fiber network with symmetric speeds up to 4 Gb/s in our table
- Broad choice of speed tiers, TV and Wi-Fi extras from one company
- Established brand with a nationwide service organisation
- Cashback promotions on selected packages
Points to check
- Regular price after the discount is higher than budget brands on the same network
- DSL over the old copper line is far slower than fiber; check which one your address gets
- Extras such as TV or extra mesh units add to the monthly cost
Alternatives to KPN
At most Dutch addresses you can choose between several providers. If KPN is not available or not the best fit, compare these:
- Odido internet – fastest fiber and 5G home internet
- Ziggo internet – cable at most addresses, strong on TV
- Delta internet – own fiber network, up to 5 Gb/s
- Budget Thuis internet – low-cost fiber with simple service
- Youfone internet – cheapest entry plans for light users

Questions about KPN internet
Is KPN the same as KPN fiber everywhere?
No. At addresses with fiber, KPN sells fiber packages. At addresses without fiber, KPN may only offer DSL over the old copper telephone line, which is much slower. A postcode and house-number check shows which one applies to your home.
Can other providers use the KPN network?
Yes. Several providers sell packages over KPN's fiber network. That is why a budget brand can sometimes offer similar speeds at your address for a lower monthly price.
Does KPN offer English customer service?
KPN provides information and support online, and English help is available for some services. The contract terms themselves are usually in Dutch, so read our expat guide for the key terms.
What happens when the KPN discount ends?
After the promotional period the regular monthly price applies. In our table the KPN deal starts at €35 and rises to €70 after 12 months, so compare the average cost, not just the first price.
