Home Internet in Rotterdam

Modern towers on the Maas, pre-war portiek flats and family homes on the edge of the city: how to choose a connection that fits the way Rotterdam lives.

Updated October 2026 Independent guide Written in plain English

Rotterdam looks different from every other Dutch city. After 1940 much of the centre was rebuilt in concrete and glass, and today the skyline is full of apartment towers along the Maas. At the same time, neighbourhoods like Blijdorp, Kralingen and Delfshaven are full of pre-war brick buildings with shared stairwells, the typical portiekwoningen. That variety has a direct effect on your home internet.

If you are new to the city, or moving from a house to an apartment, this guide explains which networks you are likely to see and how to get good Wi-Fi in a Rotterdam home.

Connection types in Rotterdam

Fiber (glasvezel) is available at many Rotterdam addresses and is common in newer apartment complexes. When it is active, you get equal upload and download speeds, which is ideal for remote work, cloud backups and gaming. Cable from Ziggo reaches most homes and is a solid choice where fiber is not connected. 5G home internet works well for a temporary stay or as a backup while you wait for installation.

As always in the Netherlands, availability depends on your exact postcode and house number. Our postcode check guide explains how to read the results and what to do if fiber is "planned" rather than "available".

High-rise living and concrete walls

Concrete is the main Wi-Fi challenge in Rotterdam. A router that easily covers a brick terraced house can struggle to reach a bedroom on the other side of a concrete wall. Practical steps that help:

  • Move the router out of the meterkast and into a central spot, using a long network cable if needed.
  • Use a mesh system with a unit in the living room and one near the bedrooms.
  • Prefer the 5 GHz or 6 GHz band for speed close to the router, and let mesh units handle distance.
  • Connect a TV or desktop with a cable when you can; it frees up Wi-Fi for phones and laptops.

See the Wi-Fi and router guide for hardware tips that suit Dutch apartments.

Neighbourhoods and surrounding towns

The same comparison logic applies whether you live by the water in the centre or in a family home in a suburb: check your address, compare the price after the discount period, and choose an upload speed that fits how you work.

Local tips for Rotterdam residents

  • Check the building, not just the street. In apartment complexes, the VvE often decides how cabling enters the building.
  • Think about upload. If you work in logistics, design or tech and send large files, symmetric fiber saves real time.
  • Bundle wisely. If you watch a lot of TV, compare internet and TV bundles against streaming services on a fast internet-only plan.
  • Keep an eye on the end of your promo. Set a reminder a month before your discount ends so you can switch or renegotiate.

Local questions

Frequently asked questions

Do new apartment towers in Rotterdam have fiber?

Many recently built apartment buildings are delivered with fiber cabling to each home, but it is never guaranteed. Ask the landlord or VvE, and confirm the result with a postcode and house-number check.

Why does Wi-Fi drop between rooms in my Rotterdam apartment?

Reinforced concrete walls and floors block Wi-Fi far more than brick or timber. Placing the router centrally, using a mesh system or running a network cable to a second access point usually fixes dead spots.

Is cable or fiber better in Rotterdam?

Both can be fast. Fiber offers symmetric upload and very low latency, which helps for video calls and gaming. Cable from Ziggo is available at most addresses and can be the quickest option where fiber is not yet active.

I live in a portiek flat. Can a technician reach my meterkast?

Usually yes. The connection often enters in a shared stairwell or in your own meterkast. Make sure someone can let the technician into the building on the appointment day.
